Mindfulness and partner dancing

How can becoming more mindful improve your partner dancing?

Mindfulness – the act of becoming more aware of and appreciating what you are doing in the present moment.

Partner dance is such a great activity for this because it has no goal and it is changing every minute. When you consciously bring your attention to your dance, you open up space to appreciate the music, yourself, your partner and the dance you are creating together so much more.

Mindfulness helps you leave behind any agenda you may have brought to the dance, such as trying to impress someone, trying to get fit, trying to improve, or just generally striving for any future goal through the act of dance. This is because all you focus on is the dance in the moment. In that moment, there are no goals and it allows you to really engage with the enjoyment of dancing.

It’s not always easy to do, but worth giving a go if you feel your dancing has become dissatisfying. By focusing mindfully, and being in the moment, in your partner dancing you may find there is a whole lot of other ‘stuff’ (like that mentioned above) that you’ve been dancing with as well. ‘Stuff’ which has been distracting you from enjoying the dance moment by moment.  Once you become aware of it, you can see it for what it is and let it go, leaving more space for your dance enjoyment.
