Yes you can

Yes you can

‘I can’t dance.’  I hear this a lot when I tell people I’m a dance teacher.  The instant reaction is quite often ‘oh, I can’t dance’ and this makes me sad to see so many people dismissive of their dance abilities because in reality dance is in all of us and we can all learn to re-awaken the dance inside of us, it just takes a safe, non-judgemental environment to help us get our confidence back that we can dance.

Because so much of our exposure to dancing only happens through music videos or professionals on stage it’s easy to lose the sense of dancing for fun or in a community.  There is a lot of scrutiny around how we look and unless we ‘look good’ all the time it’s easy to believe that you can’t dance or shouldn’t even try.  When in actual fact dance is inherent in all of us and moving to music is for everyone, not reserved solely for professionals.  Comparing yourself to professionals as a beginner or when you’ve not done much dancing before is a sure fire way to kill your confidence straight off the bat.

By all means be inspired by the awesomeness of great dancers, but don’t think dancing isn’t for you if you’re not shaking what ya got in perfect timing straight away.  You wouldn’t expect yourself to be great at tennis or skiing or open-heart-surgery without practice and dancing is no different.  Give yourself a chance (and a break) if dance hasn’t been something you’ve been much exposed to in your life.  You can do it, sometimes it just takes a little time to get into it.
